APN Data Reservation: How does it work?

APN SIMs that are linked to a Pooled Data bundle consume data of a single (shared) data bundle.  

Every time a SIM makes a connection to the network, SIMcontrol checks whether there is enough data available in the pool to establish the connection. 

To do this, each SIM "reserves" an amount of MB in the available pool. When the data session is terminated by your device, this reservation is released. The amount each SIM reserves depends on the use case and expected consumption and may differ between accounts.

Why is this important to keep in mind?
When setting up your APN refill rule, and choosing at which minimum level to refill your Pooled Data (and which size bundle to purchase), you must keep in mind that all SIMs linked to the APN bundle may request to connect to the network at the same time. It is therefore important to always have a sensible minimum data balance available in the pool, so that all SIMs can establish data sessions. 

What is a sensible minimum refill level for Pooled Data?
Set this to at least = The number of APN SIMs linked to the pool x the reservation amount + expected data usage for at least one day.

Examples: 

- 400 APN SIMs x 2MB reservation (800MB) + 1MB per day usage( 400MB). So a sensible minimum APN bundle refill level would be 1,200MB

- 100 APN SIMs x 10MB reservation (1,000MB) + 100MB per day usage (10,000). So a sensible minimum APN bundle refill level would be 11,000MB
