Many IoT applications requires a data SIM card to have a fixed (static) IP address.
This enables devices to be reached from another device or server environment using their IP address.
Since publicly accessible static IP's are not available on mobile data SIMs (and would be a massive security risk in any case), the correct approach is to enable SIMs to static private IP's on a Managed Private APN.
Public vs, Private IP for IoT devices:
| Dynamic Public IP | Static (fixed) Private IP |
Connectivity | Enables global internet connectivity – “open internet” | Security within a pre-defined private network. Only allow traffic to specific destinations. Custom firewalling |
VPN | Can be used | Can be used, but not needed if traffic is privately routed |
Security | More susceptible to attacks | Provides excellent security and end-to-end control |
IP Management | “Natted” IP issued by the local tower. (Not real IP) | Static (fixed) IP issues by Managed APN radius server. Diameter IP provisioning available on some networks. |
